When All Else Fails, Write.
The Industry
- It's Bad.
- Industry professionals tell us it's bad. Little work. No work. Little pay. No pay. No one seems to know when or if the bleeding will stop. Cable is dying. Theatres are struggling. And streaming doesn't pay.
- It's Good
- The "industry" is expanded. With direct ways to reach an audience, there are more opportunities than ever before. The gatekeepers, now more than ever, are the audience. And while there is a thirst for something different, tentpoles keep making hundreds of millions of dollars.
The Indie
- It's Bad.
- Capital is hard to get. Distribution is full of sharks. The competition varies in skill. And does anyone care about story?
- It's Good
- You are your own boss. You apply your skills to the best of your budget. You grind, you ask for favors, you borrow, and you finish.
So What To Do?
Obviously, we could make a pro's and con's list for the different sides of the same profession ad-nauseum however the point is, regardless of the path you are on or take, none of it is possible without the script. So before you even decide what lane to squeeze into, Industry or Indie, the first step is to write. The script may not be the final product, but it is the blueprint to it.
So when all else fails: funding, pre-production, casting, production, post, marketing -- remember, you can always start the dream again, if you just write.
